Common Retirement Plan Options

401(k)

Contribution Limits:

  • $19,000 deferral ($25,000 if over age 50)
  • $56,000 total limit ($62,000 if over age 50)

Eligibility – can be less restrictive but not more

  • Has reached age 21
  • Has at least one year of service

SEP IRA

Contribution Limits: cannot exceed the lesser of

  • 25% of the employee’s compensation
  • $56,000

Eligibility – can be less restrictive but not more

  • Has reached age 21
  • Has worked for the employer in at least 3 of the last 5 years
  • Received at least $600 in compensation from the employer during the year (for 2018 and 2019)

Simple IRA

Contribution Limits:

  • $13,000 deferral ($16,000 if over age 50)
  • One of the following 
    • 3% dollar for dollar match on employee contributions
    • 2% contribution to employees regardless of deferral

Eligibility – can be less restrictive but not more

  • Employees who received at least $5,000 in compensation during any 2 preceding calendar years (whether or not consecutive)
  • And they are reasonably expected to receive at least $5,000 in compensation during the upcoming calendar year
